If you go camping or hiking a lot then the chances are you’ll want to get a portable water filter. These gadgets are so handy when it comes to filtering water, as they allow you to be sure of the safety of the water you drink while out in the countryside. Similar devices have also found use in humanitarian efforts around the world where water might not be safe to drink, and also in the military.

Even if you just want to take a water filter with you for fresh tasting water wherever you are, portable water filters are a great idea! You can take them around the world and provided you are in area with the needs of the filter are met you can have fresh tasting drinking water.

Not all portable filters will filter the same thing, so you need to make sure you buy a filter that is right for the use you will be using it for. For example the Katadyn Hiker Microfilter will remove bacteria, Giardia and several other things.

You should try to get a filter that is very compact and easy to carry around. You should also use one that you know is up to the job, so if you are going to be using it on potentially harmful water, make sure that is what it is made for.

Portable water filters are great for many things, we’ve mentioned a few of them already, but they include:

Long expeditions or mountain climbing

Travelling around the world where water may not be as safe

Boating trips

Camping Trips

Disaster relief - they are especially important in these situations

Hiking or backpacking around the world

There are many portable filters on the market, often in the range of $70, so make sure you shop around before deciding on the one that suits your needs the best.

First of all, what are countertop water filters? Basically it is a fancy name for the water filters that you see sitting in poeoples kitchens. Typically these water filters hold only a small amount of drinking water in them at one time, which is a disadvantage compared with under sink water filters which filter all water coming through the tap. However for sheer simplicity nothing beats the counter top filter, and in most cases it doesn’t take much effort to refill.

For example the Pur Plus Countertop water filter system removes many different micro organisms from the water which can increase the safety of the water as well as making the water tste better. If you live in a hard water area then you’ll probably be able to tell the difference between filtered and non-filtered water immediately. Water filters can often get rid of the Chlorine tsate of water too.

The advantages of a countertop filter are that they are very easy to use. Within minutes of getting them you can use it and you don’t need any special tools or plumbing knowledge to get it working either. The filters also tend to last a long time - between 4 to 6 months - so you wont need to replace them that often. This equates to around 200 gallons of water filtered and ready to drink.

The taste of tap water can be greatly improved by using a filter. You may not notice how bad your water tastes until you try it through a filter and can really taste the difference to use the famous slogan!

The main disadvantage is that you have to manually filter the water before use, but this is usually very quick and won’t take long at all. If you keep the filter topped up all the time then this rarely becomes a problem. You could also try keeping it in the fridge as this keeps the water cool and refreshing for when you want to use it.

Countertop water filters are great if you want a quick and efficient way to filter your water and leave it tasting great.

The problem with water filters is that they do not last forever, at some point you’ll have to replace the filter itself or the water filter cartridge. Whether this is in 2 weeks or 6 months depends entirely on the manufacturer and how much you use it. As a general guide, under sink water filters tend to last around 6 months before the cartridge needs to be replaced during normal use. If you use the filter a lot more than normal though you’ll obviously have to replace it sooner.

Luckily in most cases you don’t need to replace the whole filter, just the cartridge inside the filter. This means that the expensive part can be kept the same saving you a lot of money in the long run. The cast majority of modern filters use the cartridge system but before buying a filter you should make sure this is the case for your one as it can potentially save you a lot of money. Water filter cartridges come in all shapes and sizes and cost a wide range of prices too, so it isn’t really possible to narrow down how much the cartridge will cost without first knowing which filter you have.

Some of the companies you might want to look out for when getting a new filter cartridge are Cullgian, Sears and Ametek. Each one has its own size and standard so you need to make sure you purchase a cartridge that fits your current filter or else you’ll find it useless.

There are also water filter cartridges for many different types of filter. Whether you have an under sin, whole house or household filter you need to make sure you’re purchasing a filter for the right type otherwise it probably won’t work correctly.

Under sink water filters do exactly what they say on the tin. They are water filters fitted under the sink so that the water coming out is automatically filtered. They can be used for many different reasons, for drinkin water is the main one though. They come in different types, although the main type is a carbon filter.

Water filters are generally used to improve the quality of water. Whether that is cleanliness, tste or removing harmful chemicals the general idea is the same. Under sink water filters do this automatically as the water comes through the tap so that you don’t have to worry about filtering it yourself using a household filter.

Some of the companies that manufacture under sink filters include Everpire, Culligan and many others.

Under sink filters generally aren’t that expensive, but you need to make sure you know how to fit them before trying to put them in yourself. If you have any doubts you should always contact a plumber as making a mistake with the plumbing could cost a lot of money later down the road. This is one time when DIY probably isn’t the best way to go unless you are absolutely sure you know what you’re doing.

Most of the time you can get an under sink drinking water filter system for around $80, but this doesn’t include installation so you should factor that into your budget.

Reasons To Get An Under Sink Water Filter:

They can reduce the bad taste of drinking water

They can also remove the taste of Chlorine from water

Usually the filter itself can be replaced when it has run out for very little cost

Usually the filter will last around 6 months of normal use before needing to be replaced.

At its most basic level, a water filters purpose is to remove any impurities from the water that you either drink or use for other means such as swimming pools or even fish tanks. This is why water filters is such a broad term as it covers all the possible different types of filters as well as their different uses.

Types Of Water Filters

As mentioned there are far too many water filters to list them all, but below are the ones currently covered at water filter land. Click the links for more information on each one.

Under Sink Water Filter

Water Filter Cartridge

Countertop Water Filter

Portable Water Filter

Not only are there many different types of water fitler but there is also many different uses. Cleaning drinking water is probably the most common in everday life, but there are other industrial uses for them to.

Uses Of Water Filters

People use water filters for a wide range of reasons. One of the most important uses is in water treatment plants where such filters as media and screen filters may be used. There are also other types of plant filters such as rapid sand filters and cloth filters.

Then there are portable water filters which are commonly used by people who do a lot of walking or hiking. They are also extremely important in use in natural disaster zones where the drinking water may not be safe to drink before being filtered. The military also use water filters a lot.

Then there are the average home water filters which usually use a granular activated carbon design to improve the quality of drinking water out of the tap system. These are becoming more and more common as they often improve the taste of water straight out of the tap.

No matter what your use for water filters we hope to have you covered at water filter land!

Facts About Water Filters

The simplest and cheapest water filters are carbon filters. These absorb the impurities in the water as the liquid passes through them, making them the most common choice for simple household filters. They aren’t the most effective, but they are definitely great for the average countertop filter.

Another option for water filters are wholse house water filters which can be installed by a plumber and give your wholse house filtered and clean water.

Also remember that not all water filters are created equal, and not all of them do their job as well as others. This is important because if you jump in and buy the first filter you see you may not be getting the protection that you think they are.

Water filters are a lot less expensive in the long run than buying bottled water, even if the adverts say it is completely pure and pristine. It is also much better for the environment than buying lots of plastic bottles when you could just use a single filter.

Be careful when choosing a filter that you know exactly what it takes out of the water and how efficient it is. You should also try to buy a water filter that lasts a long time and has replaceable cartridges so that you don’t have to replace the entire filter everytime it runs out. On average household filters tend to last around 6 months of normal family use before needing to be replaced, but this varies according to the manufacturer.
